Year 13 Engaging with Aboriginal Children and Young People – a conversation

year13

As part of Reconciliation Week, Year13 held a live webinar with their Year13 Truth Project facilitator Scott Wilson to learn about his experience of working with Australian youth and in particular Aboriginal children.

Scott is a Gooniyandi person from Muladja, a remote community outside of Fitzroy Crossing, but spent most of his life with the Yawuru people in Broome, Western Australia. Since finishing high school in Perth, Scott has gone on to complete a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Anthropology at University of Western Australia. With a passion to help those in need, Scott has excelled as an Ambassador for HeadSpace, Strategic Advisor for Orygen, National Engagement Officer for Aurora Education Foundation and presenter for Year13’s The Truth Project.

Saxon Phipps, Founder and Managing Director of Year13 talks with Scott about a range of issues including aboriginal identity, language, family, connection to the land, cultural integration into schools, forming stronger relationships with Aboriginal students, as well as how to best create inclusive learning environments for them.

In the spirit of reconciliation and of coming together, this webinar provided a safe and collaborative space for participants to ask any questions that they may have been too afraid to ask in the past. Whether you’re someone who works with young people, or just a curious member of the public, this video is worth your time as it unpacks stories, questions and ideas on what it means to be #InThisTogether.

Year13’s commitment is to join forces with industry and government bodies to sponsor as many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) students across Australia as possible, with the aim of supporting 10,000 ATSI students to develop their school to work transition plan over the next three years. If you’d like to join them on that journey, please reach out: christina@year13.com.au
