Study Indigenous Languages at TAFE NSW

Language is an essential part of life, culture and identity and with 90% of Aboriginal languages considered endangered, the time to protect languages is now.

In 2017, the NSW Government created the first legislation in Australia to acknowledge the importance of revitalising First Languages. This is an opportunity for Aboriginal people to reclaim history and belonging; and learn, teach and use their skills to contribute to the health and longevity of these complex and beautiful languages.

TAFE NSW offers courses in Aboriginal language and culture (Certificates I-III). The languages, Gamilaraay and Wiradjuri, are from western NSW and are offered at Dubbo and Warren campuses.

The courses are available to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians. Participation is open to Aboriginal peoples who are of Aboriginal descent, identify as Aboriginal and are accepted as such by the local Aboriginal community. Participation by non-Aboriginal people is subject to local Aboriginal community approval.

Why study Aboriginal culture and language?

Studying Aboriginal culture and language gives you the gift of connection with the language, the people, and the culture of the oldest living and surviving race of people on the planet. You’ll go on a historical journey as you develop Aboriginal language skills, and understand the deep historical bond that language signifies in Aboriginal culture.

You’ll find incredibly rewarding employment as an Aboriginal language specialist, as you immerse yourself in Aboriginal culture, inspire inclusion, break down social barriers and build strong community relationships.
