Aged care students in demand with local employers – TAFE NSW Inverell

With employment opportunities in the aged care industry expected to grow strongly over the next five years, McLean Care Inverell is employing skilled TAFE NSW students before they complete their qualification.

McLean Care Inverell, Care Services Manager, Cathy Wyper, said versatile students like Erin Bridges, Evelyn Schembri, Lauren Mangano and Olivia Trevithick are sought after by aged care providers because they are equipped with the job ready skills they need to hit the ground running.

“There is a shortage of skilled aged care workers in the region and we look favourably on TAFE NSW students who are eager to learn and are the right fit for this industry.”

McLean Care’s newest employees are gaining practical skills and experience by completing a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) at TAFE NSW Inverell.

Lauren Mangano said “Studying at TAFE NSW has provided me with the perfect pathway to her dream of becoming a nurse and I’m really thrilled to gain employment so quickly.

“I’ve been able to apply the hands-on skills I have learnt at TAFE NSW in my role at McLean Care Inverell, which involves developing day-to-day activities for residents to keep them active and engaged, work health and safety and much more.”

Evelyn Schembri had worked in an administrative role in the healthcare industry for some time and decided to upskill at TAFE NSW to switch to a nursing role.

“I really enjoy helping people – caring and assisting the elderly seemed like the perfect fit for me. TAFE NSW has equipped me with the practical skills to make the perfect career change.

“The best part about working with the elderly is getting to know them and learning about their distinctive personalities and life experiences.”

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Health and Nursing, Amanda Morris said TAFE NSW works closely with local aged care facilities to arrange work experience opportunities for students to learn and practice their skills in an employment setting.

“Aged care workers continue to be in demand and Erin, Evelyn, Lauren and Olivia are the perfect examples of students coming to TAFE NSW to get the skills and experience they need to be in a job they’ll love.”
